Tufted Duck is an abundant freshwater diving duck in the Old World.  It is resident in Britain and most of Northern Europe, but also breeds throughout most of northern Asia.

A few females have white undertail coverts, which has on occasion resulted in some individuals being erroneously reported as Ferruginous Duck. I suspect that this may have happened with the bird below, as a Ferruginous Duck was reported as being present at Linlithgow Loch the day before I took this photograph.
